Students have very few options when it comes to identifying opportunities that are meant for freshers and apply for them. This include

Paper Advertisements: Gone are those days where there were very few papers were there in the market. With so many news papers in the market it is difficult for students to have access to all news papers and find the opportunities hidden somewhere. The situation is no different with employers. It is very difficult to decide where to advertise and if that is going to be seen by target audience. Employers have always complained that print media is not able to provide them with visibility what it used to give previously. The quality and quantity of response to the ads have gone down considerably. With rates hitting the roof, the advertisements for fresher recruitments are very few to find and most of them are now seen in classified sections. Notable and majority of companies have stopped advertising their requirements in papers because of failure to reach right candidates and limited geographical impact that covers one or very few regions.


Job Portals: Now let us see the interesting case of job portals where many students flock at Naukri, Monster, and Time Jobs to find opportunities. Let us understand how these job portals function. Once you understand that you will have a clear idea on why many employers are not recruiting using those portals . As a student, you do not spend a single rupee to post your profile on these job sites or search for jobs posted. As a student it is absolutely free for you but the real challenge is that they charge the employer and that too big money. Can you believe that a employer has to spend about 1 lakh rupees for each login to access fresher profiles like yours. Do you think a small enterprise that would recruit, say 10 people in a year can afford this kind of cost. Indirectly cost of each hire is 10,000 per hire. To post a simple job to hire a fresher, employers would have to spend quite a fortune. Though this is the best option available for employers, the cost is so prohibitive that it discourages 95% of the employers from using job portals as a source of finding freshers.


Manpower Agencies: These are of great help to companies but again they have limited scope and reach and are most expensive when compared to other options. Not many companies engage them because they charge fee that is equivalent to one month salary. If you join a company at a salary of 25000 per month then company is paying 25k to the consultants. Except for big companies, no one uses this as an option.


Referrals: The best of all is being referred by a friend into the company. This is one of the successful and time tested method and majority of the companies, irrespective of their size or sector , prefer to use this a methodology to hire freshers. The chances of you finding a job increases many fold when you are referred by an internal employee of an organization. Most of the times organization do not have to pay any fee for this and some prefer to incentivize the employees who refer employable candidates.
